Sustainability is the ability to exist constantly.Being Sustainable is important for a very simple, very straightforward reason: we cannot maintain our quality of life as human beings, until and unless we embrace and look after our mother Earth. The goal of sustainable development is to meet the needs of today, without compromising the needs of tomorrow. For example , recently the news of Burning of Brazil’s Amazon forest came into light. The space agency said it had detected more than 74,000 fires between January and August and more than 9,500 forest fires since in less than a week, mostly in the Amazon region, CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said the fires are “definitely human-induced”, and it was mainly for farming and for factories.
Another , 2,702 trees in Mumbai’s Aarey forest, Mumbai’s green lungs, will be axed for a car shed for Mumbai Metro-3.
All these forest are burned and cut down , for our selfishness , so that we have more buildings and malls , but these are not going to work for a long, climate change is happening , global temperature is rising. It’s high time we look into our actions before it’s too late.
1.Recycle for Sustainable Development
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects, that would otherwise be thrown away as trash, it is one of the best ways that you can promote sustainable development. Recycling old products into new useful product instead of buying another product from the market would prevent the waste of potentially useful material. Reusing and buying products made with recycled materials has many far reaching benefits .You also save valuable landfill space. Brands like Adidas , Everlane , Nike , Timberland are using recycled plastic for their products.
2.Make informed choices
We usually buy things that we probably don’t even need , we buy goods because it was on sale or because it was really tempting . Before you buy anything make sure you really need it . For example , you could have food have food in refrigerator that you haven’t eat yet, or you might have those type of dress but you want to buy another and later you won’t even wear it will only take up space in your wardrobe .Also, you can make a shift in your purchasing practices by choosing sustainable goods and services.
3.Minimize waste for Sustainable Development
Waste minimization for sustainable development, is a set of processes and practices intended to reduce the amount of waste produced. Reducing what you waste is a great way to live sustainably. 4.Carpool or use public transportation more often
With increase in the standard of living , people nowadays buy luxury products and appliances that make their life more easy, under those comes Car, Bike, Scotty. People prefer bike over cycle , and just to go buy groceries they take the bike , and give up walking which not only cause too much traffic jams but also cause pollution . If we all took the bus to work/college/school once in a while, it would have a great impact on the air quality of our cities.
5.Plant more trees
I don’t think , I certainly have to empathize how important it is to plant more trees .Planting more trees and plants hasmany environmental, economic, and social benefits. Trees improve air quality of the place we live in by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen and give us food and shade. Trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. Many species of wildlife depend on trees for habitat. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals. Trees also save us from climatic changes, natural disasters, and catastrophes.
6.Be a smart shopper to Promote Sustainable Development
We as a consumer hold way more power than we realize, when it comes to defining the production of goods. Buy in a bulk or of large a size/container, which also cost a little less where you’ll at least save a penny , and will also cause less waste, it helps for sustainable development. If you’re not liking something about a product , then write it to them (to the Company) , it might sound very childish but you can ask your friends and family to do the same thing ,and if the complaints are being reported more often , the company might look after it , which might eventually stop those production and which will save the energy , water and transportation cost , which at the end is only going to the landfill.
7.Eliminate a few single use products from your life
single use products such as Plastic spoon , fork , plates , straw, cup creates a lot of waste in the environment . Switching to metal straws or reusable straw will not only prevent the extra waste but will also help turtles . Due to straws turtles get harmed , Straws can get up a sea turtle’s nose, or a sea turtle can eat the straw, because it thinks it’s food. Many cafes and restaurant use plastic cups for providing drinks , you can bring it home (if possible) and use it as pot to plant plants such as money plants , succulent , which doesn’t require much space and water.
8.Think before throwing something away
We often get rid of our clothes , shoes why? Because it is not in the trend or is not appropriate for this season , or doesn’t fit us anymore , without realizing that we can still get many more wear of it . And all goods we got rid of goes to the landfill . But apparel isn’t the only thing that people throw away too readily: furniture, electronics, books, and kitchen appliances all belong in this category too.
So, Whenever possible, donate, sell, or give away your unwanted items, and purchase with quality in mind.
9.Conserve water and electricity
Many parts of the world is currently experiencing sever drought. About half of India is facing drinking water crisis as monsoon got delayed and arrived without a brimming bucket. Due to the over-exploitation of groundwater, unequal distribution and availability, wastage of water.
Burning fossil fuels for producing electricity releases enormous amounts of pollution into the atmosphere. … These ecological threats are just a few of the reasons why it is so important to conserve electricity.
It’s time to take a look at your water and power usage. Set a goal to shave a couple minutes off of your shower time, turn off the lights and unplug appliances when you are not using them .
These changes are so small that you almost won’t notice them, but they’ll add up in a significant way.
10.Try to cut out plastic
Plastic seems to have found its way into every single aspects of our life. From every chips to chocolates to drinks we buy everything is packed in plastic /plastic bottles.
